When people start to understand how dogs learn and how receptive they can be when we all start sharing a common language it is a eureka moment. It's quite emotional and I never tire of sharing that moment with families. I thoroughly researched who I should train with to get the credentials I needed to become a professional dog trainer.
It took 2 years to decide. I found the KPA Professional Qualification. At the time you could only complete it by going to America and I wasn't able to do that. Then they brought the Qualification to England so I signed up. 12 months later I was the first KPA CTP (Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner) in the UK.
Selecting a KPA CTP means that your professional trainer:
- Is skilled in using positive teaching and training techniques with you and your pet to make training fun.
- Is educated about using science and behaviour-based methods to make training more efficient.
- Can customise a training program specifically designed to help you and your pet communicate and succeed together.
- Participates in programs for quality assurance and continuing education to ensure the training you receive is based on modern research and technology.
- Pledges to teach and train using force-free principles so that you and your dog develop a bond built on trust and respect.
I love dogs and have four of my own. I love training my own dogs but I also really enjoy sharing what I know about training with dog owners so they can enjoy and build on their relationships with their own dogs.
Training dogs isn't rocket science and has come a long way in the last 20 years from the days of Barbara Woodhouse. Now it's all science based and the most recently trained professionals are the trail blazers for dog-friendly training techniques. This is me. I am reward-based, I am dog-friendly and I'm here to help.
I acquired my qualification with The Karen Pryor Academy. It is renowned worldwide for producing some of the best trainers in the industry. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was an intense 9 months and the pass rate was high. I qualified feeling I was a competent dog trainer. Although I still wanted to add to my knowledge base. I needed Applied Behaviour foundations so I would be able to help owners with any undesirable behaviours they might encounter.
I completed a course with Behaviour Works (Susan G. Friedman, Ph.D). LLA Professional is designed to provide the foundation for a comprehensive and coherent understanding of behaviour analysis as it relates to facilitating the lives of captive and companion animals. I really enjoyed studying this topic and qualified knowing that I was armed with the most current knowledge I needed to be very effective in helping pet owners.
I am also on the ABTC Register of Animal Training Instructors. This standard is about planning and managing the training of animals. http://www.abtcouncil.org.uk
